One man is dead, 10 others were arrested after they tried to set free their colleagues who were found ferrying 400 bags of uncustomed sugar.
The lorry which had been detained at Chwele police station was being escorted to Kisumu under tight security by DCI detectives and CIPU officers when it came under attack from the suspects.
The arrested suspects are Evans Ariko 22, Geoffrey Ikasalion 28, Dan Oure 23, Thomas Ekisa 24, Isaac Etyang 21, Sammy Oloo 22, David Otieno 27, Simon Ogema 24, Kelvin Kasala 21 and Winnie Muriuki, 22.
DCI boss George Kinoti on Monday said in the ensuing melee, one officer was attacked and injured by the gang, leaving him with injuries on his chest and limbs.
“Luckily, a contingent of police officers from Kakamega that was headed to Chwele reinforced the officers, restoring sanity and helping in the arrest of the suspects,” Kinoti said.

Also recovered were crude weapons that were in the possession of the gang.
The suspects are being processed at Kakamega police station for arraignment.
Last year, Kenya Revenue Authority arrested six suspects and seized 550 bags of unaccustomed sugar worth approximately Sh 2 Million in Bungoma.
The suspects were arrested in possession of the sugar branded Lugazi which is believed to have been smuggled from Uganda.
KRA officers were acting on intelligence when they arrested the suspects at the home of one 0f the suspects located at Sikata, off Kimilili road in Bungoma County.
